Millions and millions of pounds are spent on seducing us to buy things. Packing, colours, placement of items in shops, advertising, clever wording. By the time we've already picked up an item in a shop we are part way to buying it. That's ok if we are in control of what we are buying, but how about trying STOP!?

S - Stop – when we pick up a shop item

T - Think – do we need (or really want) it?

O - Observe – the ways we may be being seduced into buying it

P - Put the item down (depending on the answer to T)!

Most of us have bought things only to find we never really use them afterwards. A pair of lovely earrings that aren't quite so nice after a few times, a beautiful candle that sits in the cupboard, a 3 for 2 offer on books/CDs/T-shirts/etc., bargain shoes, a present for a friend who doesn't really want it... does any of this sound familiar?

The problem is to stop this before the items get in the house! Someone I know tells her father he doesn't need 3 nets of satsumas for the price of 2 – he only needs 1. Otherwise they'll go off before he can eat them. But the temptation is there. It takes real awareness to resist.

I've found recently that I can get pleasure simply from the thought that an item is beautiful. That is enough – I don't have to possess it. Beautiful coloured earrings, beautiful trinket. Move on. A beautiful sunset is something to appreciate for the time it is there. So can it be for other things. But the need for possession seems to be part of current society.

Sure, we buy things we love or need (or both!). It's not about never buying anything. But being aware when something may sit redundantly in a cupboard for yonks can save money, packaging, guilt trips, space.... (think of all the clutter!)

It's not always easy to STOP!, I know that, but may be it's something to consider in an era of consumerism - and if you want to save money!

The other day I was offered a second pair of glasses 'free' with the ones I was buying. After trying to decide for ages which frames and lenses to have in which combination, I decided the whole thing was ridiculous as I only wanted one pair! When I went to collect them, they had obviously taken pity on the mad woman who refused the special offer, and given me the next offer instead, thus a £40+ refund for me. I felt good!

Ooo, now this is good. very good, Andi - thank you. You're right. All it takes is a moment to stop and think instead of being brainwashed.

What is the most amazing 'must have' thing that you've resisted in the shops?

Am loving that discount, Alison - what a great use of the resource available; far more meaningful to you and less waste for the environment.

Hi, thanks everyone for the comments.

Fantastic Alison, love the glasses experience! How nice to get a money reward for being unselfish! In my case I would actually take the second pair as I'm too used to sitting on my glasses or something.

Most amazing resisted 'must-have'? Don't know... I got used to resisting things when i couldn't pay the mortgage a few years ago! I put back a nightie and nice T-shirt last week - they were 25% off and I liked them both. I eventually decided I didn't need them. Obviously the '25% off' had been the initial draw.

the power of marketing. They spend billions on getting psychology involved. I've been explaining it to my eight year old and it's been very interesting to see her question things ;)

well done on resisting!

Loved this article. Well done on the competition. I LOVE the idea of appreciating something that someone wants us to buy without actually buying it. I'm going to try that.

Brilliant article! I have the results of a life of shopping to deal with (not my life.. mother-in-law's) so I'm finding that I am less inclined just to buy stuff. I also know that there are too many of something when it keeps turning up in charity shops (scented candles are a classic).

My tip - if you have something either use it.. now or get rid.

I am blogging about getting rid...

Two points to keep in mind.
The only reason an item is sold is for someone to make money - your money.
If an item is price reduced/2 for 1/etc it is not the retailer paying the difference but some poor grower/factory worker.

What are tags? Tags are essentially categories and are the key words that people use to describe their listings or articles. Any word can be used as a tag except for ones that are naughty and would probably not be repeatable in polite company.
